As promised in last week’s post, today I’m showing you how to make a DIY coffee filter wreath. This was my first go at trying my hand at wreath making, and I must say I am happy with the results. The color is vibrant and I’m in love with the fluff that this wreath has going on.
And best of all, it was an easy and frugal DIY project (my favorite kind).
I promise, this is an easy tutorial. Just a bit time consuming. But it’s so worth it. I mean, look at that fluff!
To start, you’ll need the following.
1. 200 Dyed coffee filters (check out my “how to dye coffee filters w/ food coloring” post here)
2. 14″ Wreath Form (and something to hang it with)
3. Low Temperature Glue Gun
4. Low Temperature (or all temp) Glue Sticks
5. 2.5″ Burlap Ribbon
Start by holding the coffee filter and squishing/scrunching the tip. Try your best to make the end (the part you’ll glue to the wreath) flat, so it adheres more easily. A tighter squish makes for a better looking wreath. I found it easiest to form the coffee filters ten at a time to speed things up.
I started attaching the coffee filters to the inner part of the wreath working my way outward. This was the most difficult part because I was trying to figure out how best to attach the filters. I found that adding a dab of glue to the flat end of the squished filter and then pressing and holding it to the wreath form worked best.
This image below shows what I mean about working in rows. My 14″ wreath form required three rows. One thing I neglected to do, was to occasionally check that I had an equal amount of fluff on all sides before moving forward with the next row.
Before starting on a new row, go back in and fill in any gaps and bare spots.
The entire process took about four Doctor Who Episodes. So, three hours.
I forgot to take pictures of the little burlap hanger thing I made that allows the wreath to hang from the wreath hanger. Making one is optional. I chose to make one because my wreath hanger sat high on the door and I wanted the top of my wreath to sit slightly above the door knocker so it was still accessible.
I’ll try to explain as best I can. Basically, I made two loops and attached them together. The bottom loop was wrapped around the wreath and the top loop was used to hang from the store-bought wreath hanger. Sorry if this isn’t making sense.
To make the burlap hanger,I cut off a piece long enough to wrap around the wreath, folded the piece of burlap ribbon in half (width wise) and applied glue along one of the edges in order to permanently hold it together at that width. I did that for both loops. Then I looped them around each other and secured with more hot glue.
Here’s the finished result.
I love how the coffee filter wreath turned out. It wasn’t a difficult process – just a lot of squishing and gluing. If you survived my elementary tutorial-teaching skills, THANK YOU.
You win the honor of most patient reader ever. 🙂
Like #20, I also have made the wreath with pieces of cloth, many years ago. I was wondering if you could use “floral pins” instead of hot glue on the coffee filters?
Love the wreath. I would love to make a pink one for breast cancer awareness in October.
I also love Doctor Who!! Started watching during the Peter Davidson Era. Yup, I am that old 🙂
A pink wreath would be absolutely lovely – Especially for such a great purpose! Doctor Who is perfection. I only wish I’d been watching it longer! 🙂
I made a wreath very much like this years ago. But I used a straw wreath form with assorted fabric pieces. And instead of hot melt glue I used Elmer’s white glue. I took a phillips head screwdriver and put the point in the center of the piece of fabric, held the fabric around it while I dipped both in the glue. Then you push the glued end into the straw wreath form. No burnt fingers and it has held up very well over the last 25 years or so. I used a red and green plaid fabric and it turned out great.
This is honestly adorable! I’m going to give it a shot!
Thank you!,

Hi Jazmine! You were my feature pick for WDW this past week! I love this, so cute! Thanks for linking and hope to see you again this week!
I really love this wreath Jazmin! I love the color you dyed it as well. Not too bright but not too dim either. It looks great. Your tutorial and teaching skills were just fine for me LOL. TFS and Happy Thanksgiving!
Hugs,
Jo

It looks beauteous! Too bad you didn’t remember the pencil trick… hot glue burns HURT! 🙁
It definitely did hurt! I had one burn on my hand that hurt until the next day. :/
So fluffy I’m gonna die!! No but seriously, so stinkin’ cute! I’m obsessed. At first glance I thought you stuck the filters to the wreath foam with pins and that made me nervous haha. Now that I know it’s just hot glue I feel like I could definitely make one. Fantastic tutorial!
You can definitely make one. You and your crafty skills will totally outdo my wreath!
I love love love this, so pretty!! 🙂 Stopping by from the DBB, thanks for sharing & I pinned!
Thanks so much, Jenn!
I am pinning this post because of all the Doctor Who references. Anything that takes that many Doctor Who episodes takes too long, LOL. Very pretty though.
Haha and the Doctor saves the day again by inspiring you to pin! Gotta love that Doctor 😉
Already pinned this – but came by to tell you that I love how easy this is 🙂
Thanks, Jamie! I appreciate the pin and your comment. 🙂
This is beautiful and I like the idea of recycling the coffee filter. Pin
Thank you so much, Ken!
Ok this post rocks my socks for so many dang reasons.
1. your wreath looks fantastic. Its utterly delicious!
2. your image mark up has me drooling all over my keyboard, good thing its water proof.
3. counting your time in whovian increments shows true dedication. I can’t help but think of Whoville as in the Grinch. What I haven’t been converted to Doctor Who just yet?!
That is all the gushing I have for now…
Oh just you wait, I WILL convert you into a Doctor Who lover. I eventually convert everyone I know! And thank you! I was laughing hysterically at the amount of times I used “loop” in that picture. Seriously, there are no synonyms for loop!
Love it! I’m seriously going to try this one. Wondering if leaving the coffee filters white would be too plain or perfect or winter. Hmmm…decisions. 🙂
I think a white wreath would be great for winter! Maybe add some glitter to make it sparkle?
I made a white one and used a glossy sparkly red chirstmas themed pick (walmart craft and floral department) and it looks beautiful!! Have fun!
