I’ve made my own cleaners for quite a while now. But I didn’t totally love it until I started using essential oils. No matter what I tried, there was always a lingering vinegar scent that I just couldn’t kick! There is still a slight vinegar scent even with EOs, however, it’s faint and disappears quickly.
As you can see in the recipe below, I’m not using exact measurements because the volume of each liquid changes depending on the size of the bottle I’m using for my homemade cleaner. For a smaller bottle, like the one pictured, I’d use about 20 drops of EO. For a larger bottle, I’d use 30.
- Water – 2/3 way full
- White Vinegar – 1/3 way full
- Orange Essential Oil – 20 to 30 drops (or use your favorite scent!)
- Dish soap, a few drops. (I’d say a loose 1/8 teaspoon if you prefer to measure. You don’t need very much!)
- Spray Bottle
Pour all ingredients into spray bottle. Fill with water. Shake. And that’s all it takes!
I add the essential oil for scent. If you prefer not to use EO, you can also scent it yourself with citrus peels using a technique similar to this. I’ve tried that in the past and it’s better than no fragrance at all, but you can still smell the vinegar a bit.
The orange essential oil I used does a nice job in masking the vinegar smell. Lemon EO smells great too! Feel free to use any essential oil you’d like as it’s just being used for fragrance.
I’m always experimenting and my recipe is always being tweaked. So I encourage you to play around with the ratios after you become comfortable making your own cleaners!
You can also make this in larger batches if you’d like. But I prefer making just one bottle of cleaner at a time so I can switch up my scent every few weeks.
