One of my fondest memories is watching my toddler make their first marks on paper. And it’s more than just a fun way to pass the time. 🖍️ Making Coloring Time Fun For Tiny Hands
I know for a fact coloring with a toddler is one messy, but also adorable and joyful memory you will cherish for life! It’s less about staying in the lines, and more about exploration and learning.
Here are some simple tips I successfully employed that’ll help you make the most of each coloring session.
👉 Choose Toddler-Friendly Tools
The right supplies make all the difference for little hands that are still developing their grip. Instead of standard crayons, try:
- Chunky or Egg-Shaped Crayons – These are so much easier for tiny fists to hold and control.
- Washable Finger Paints – So much fun! Spreading paint around with their hands is a fantastic sensory experience (just be sure to use a smock and cover your table).
- Dot Markers – These are wonderful for this age. They get the satisfaction of making a mark without needing the fine motor skills for scribbling.
👉 Chat & Learn
This is where a simple coloring page becomes a fun learning game! As they color an animal, make the sound together.
This connects the animal to the sound and makes the whole experience more interactive and fun.
👉 It’s All About the Process
Your toddler’s finished page will likely be a glorious scribble, and that’s great! The goal isn’t a perfectly colored-in lion; it’s the joy they get from the creative process.
Praise their effort and talk about the colors they’re using – this is another learning opportunity that often goes unnoticed.
📌BONUS FREEBIE: These free printable dinosaur coloring sheets are also a great activity for toddlers and older kids. It might be difficult to teach your tot the dinosaur names (these are too wordy for such young children), but they sure are fun to color!
The conversations that happen during these simple moments are priceless. I’d love for you to share a cute or funny thing your toddler said while coloring.
