6 Double Chocolate Muffin in a Jar

This came about when our son was involved in a school club and we made hundreds of chocolate chip muffins. I’m not joking! They were the perfect snack and since they were portable and kept for a couple of days. The kids were able to snack on them in between games!

As far as muffins go, I love them but I always tend to add a few extra chocolate chips. (You can never have enough!) You may not want to count calories for these, but it is worth it!

🍽️ Why This Recipe Works

Makes a Wonderful Gift | If you want to make someone feel special, give them these muffins. They will be so excited!

Frugal | The ingredients are frugal and you won’t need to spend much money on them. You probably have most of them already in your kitchen.

Delicious | These are sinfully delicious! it’s hard to resist the incredible flavor or texture.

🍫 Ingredients

  • Sugar: I use a combination of brown and white sugar and it gives them a perfect sweetness.
  • Chocolate Chips: There are no wrong answers when it comes to chocolate chips! Nothing is off-limits, so pick your favorite.
  • Cocoa Powder: Using cocoa powder gives the muffins a deep and rich chocolate flavor.

🍪 Instructions

Step One: Find, clean and thoroughly dry a quart sized jar.

Step Two: Add the dry ingredients in the order listed in the recipe card and keep gently patting them down. I like to compress the ingredients on a hard surface like the counter.

Step Three: Put the lid on and attach the printable tag that includes the baking directions.

⚠️ Word of caution – when putting in the ingredients, make sure to keep tapping it down so all the ingredients will fit! If you just gently pour in the ingredients, you will not get it all to fit.😋

🍫 Expert Tips

  • This recipe could be changed into a Triple Chocolate Chip Muffin by dividing the one cup of chocolate chips into two different chocolates. Alternatively, drizzle melted white chocolate on top!
  • Make sure not to over-bake the muffins or they will become dry and a little dense.
  • Give them to teachers, daycare workers, people you work with, neighbors, or anyone else!

Recipe FAQs

Can I Make These into Mini Muffins?

Absolutely! They would be great!! Cook for 8-10 minutes and start checking on them. Since they are so much smaller, they will cook very fast! Just like above, you can add different chocolate chips or drizzle melted chocolate on top! Sprinkle them with powdered sugar.

How do you store muffins?

Once the muffins are baked, store them in an airtight container. They will last at room temperature for 4-5 days. You can also freeze the muffins in a freezer bag or container for 2-3 months.

Why are my muffins hard?

If the muffins end up hard, it’s most likely because the batter was overmixed or they were baked too long. Be sure to just mix the batter until it’s barely mixed, and don’t go overboard. Also, double-check your oven temperature and make adjustments as needed.

Equipment

  • Quart Sized Mason Jar

Ingredients

For the Jar (Stack in the Order Listed Below)

  • 1 ¼ cup Brown Sugar
  • ¼ cup White Sugar
  • 2 ½ cups Flour
  • 2 tsp Baking Powder
  • ⅔ cup Cocoa Powder
  • 1 cup Chocolate Chips your choice of flavor

Gift Tag

  • ½ cup Oil
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 2 Eggs
  • 2 tsp Vanilla

Instructions

For the Jar

  • Layer the ingredients into the mason jar in the order that is listed.
  • Gently tap the jar on the counter on a towel so the ingredients will settle or there might not be enough room.
  • Add tag with directions and ribbon/bow for gift giving.

For the Gift Tag

  • Print out, cut and tie to the jar for gift giving.
  • Alternatively, you could use a sticker machine to apply the adhesive to the back of the paper and apply to the side of the jar.
  • Gift tag has instructions to cook at 350 degres for 15-18 minutes in lined muffin liners. Will make 12 muffins.

Notes

Jar Choice: Try to find a quart sized jar that is a little wider/bigger, if that makes sense. You’ve seen then at Home Goods or TJ Maxx…look at the photo and you’ll see. The ingredients fit perfectly so just be aware. 🙂
Over Baking: Don’t over bake the muffins so they don’t get dry.
Storage: Store them in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
Mini Muffin Option: Cook for 8-10 minutes and start checking on them. Since they are so much smaller, they will cook very fast! Just like above, you can add different chocolate chips or drizzle chocolate on top! You could even sprinkle them with powdered sugar.
Harder Muffins: If the muffins end up hard, it’s most likely because the batter was over mixed or they were baked too long. Be sure to just mix the batter until it’s barely mixed, and don’t go overboard. Also, double-check your oven temperature and make adjustments as needed. The last thing that could happen is that the flour measurement is off. Remember when baking to use a spoon to scoop flour INTO the dry measuring cup and then LEVEL off with the back of a knife. If you SCOOP the flour, you could be adding 2-4 tbsps more flour than you need which make these harder.

In the recipe it says 1 cup of milk, but on the printed tag is says 1 1/4 cups of milk. Which should it be.
Also I see the temperature isn’t indicated on the tag either.
    Thanks

Mary Ann, you are right about the tag. I see the instructions correctly in the recipe plug in but that sure doesn’t help the person receiving the gift!! I’m off to fix this and please accept my gratitude that you stopped by to tell me! Cheers! Ginny

I’m not sure how anyone was able to get all of this mix in a quart size jar. We’ve done two so far and there is no way it’s all fitting!
I have six more to make. I’d love any tips anyone has.

Gift tag instructions do not include temperature or number of muffins it makes. Also, jars from this company (Quality Glassware) are generally larger than quarts, just about 1.5 quarts for a medium and a bit over 1 quart for a small (43 oz/34 oz). This recipe does not fit in a typical quart-sized mason jar, even with tamping all of the ingredients down. A quart is 4 cups and there’s nearly 6 cups of ingredients here, though flour compacts reasonably well if you’re measuring it correctly. Using a tamper, I was able to get everything but the chocolate chips into a quart-sized Ball mason jar. The cocoa powder barely fit, but it worked!

Hi AnaMarie! Thanks so much for stopping by! You are so correct! I left off the 350 on the printable but did put it in the recipe card. I’ll go ahead and fix that! The instructions call for a little big larger and wider quart sized jar as shown in the photos. I do say that as the standard 32 ounce jar is just too tight. My 34 ounce jar shown in the photo did hold everything once it was packed tightly. You can always use a little larger jar as well. I’ll adjust the printable though! Thank you for telling me that! Happy Holidays! Ginny
