📅 Calendar Planning Hacks For A Smashing September
It’s true, monthly calendars are pretty intuitive but there are ways to really make your planning more efficient. The methods below are my tried-and-true, so grab your favorite pens and markers and let’s turn those calendars into productivity powerhouses.
📌 Color Coding
Color coding is an awesome way to figure out what your notes are about even before reading them. You just need a set of colored pens or markers. This is the system I use:
- 🔵 Blue – Work deadlines and meetings
- 🟢 Green – Family activities
- 🔴 Red – Important events
- 🟠 Orange – Errands and chores
- 🟡 Yellow – Social commitments
- 🟣 Purple – Self-care
📌 Symbols
Symbols are another great way to make your calendar more visually appealing and easy to navigate. Here are a few of my go-to symbols:
- ⭐Stars – Birthdays
- ❤️Hearts – Anniversaries
- ‼️Exclamation points – Important deadlines
- 💲Dollar signs – Bill payments and other purchases
- 💡Lightbulbs – Bright ideas
- ✔️Checkmarks – Completed tasks
- ✈️Airplanes – Travel plans
- 🎵Music notes – Concerts and performances
- 🙂Smiley faces – Fun outings
🕒 Time Blocking
If you really want to take your productivity to the next level, try time blocking. It’s a game-changer! You have full control of every hour. I also noticed this method helps me not lose track of time.

I use these free printable time blocking templates. One sheet lets you create a solid weekly schedule, and another one is to plan each day with more detail.
💭 Monthly Reflections
At the end of each month, take a few minutes to reflect on what worked well and what could be improved. Did you overschedule yourself? Did you forget any important events?
It doesn’t take long to answer these questions and the insights are super helpful for making your next month more organized and fulfilling.
🔔 Reminders
Even the best-laid plans can sometimes slip our minds. I like to set reminders for important events and deadlines. No more “oops” moments!
You can use your phone, a sticky note, or even a good old fashioned alarm clock. What matters is to find a system that works for you and stick with it.
✨ Things To Do in September
The first month of fall comes with plenty of exciting events and activities. In fact, my September is already shaping up to be pretty busy. Let’s grab our calendars, a pumpkin spice latte, and schedule all the fun stuff!
🎇 Labor Day
First up, we’ve got Labor Day! It’s the unofficial end of summer, so let’s make it count. Fire up the grill, gather your loved ones, and enjoy one last hurrah before the cold weather sneaks in.
🍎 School’s Back in Session
Transitioning from summer back to the school routine goes much smoother with a little planning and organization.
When my son Spencer was still in school, my main problem was creating healthy and nutritious lunches that also made him happy. My solution? This free printable lunchbox planner.

It also has an interactive lunchbox builder sheet, that lets you select the main ingredients and you can even let your child participate. You’ll have a solid foundation for building lunches he’ll actually eat. It’s a lifesaver, trust me!
🏈 Football Frenzy
Jason and I are those people who start counting down the days to football season as soon as the Super Bowl ends. If you’re excited for September we can totally relate. Football season is back, baby!
Speaking of game-day bashes, I’ve got you covered with not one, but two fantastic free printable sets!
First up, my free printable Game Day party decor has everything you need to deck out your space in football-themed fun, from banners and cupcake toppers to water bottle labels and snack tags.
Then, to keep the energy high and the laughs rolling, grab my free big game printables, which include fun charades, prediction cards, and even a football bingo game.
🥫 Canning Craze
The wonderful produce fall has to offer is definitely worth preserving. Even if you don’t have your own garden, you’ll find some pretty good deals in nearby farmer’s markets.
I love stocking up my pantry with homemade jams, jellies, and pickles. To really enjoy these homemade goodies, I make sure they’re well organized. That’s why I created these free printable and editable canning labels!

They have space to write both the contents and the canning date on each jar and container. This way, you can enjoy them while they’re fresh and avoid food waste.
If you prefer freezing some of your produce I also have these free printable and editable freezer labels. It’s so nice to be stocked up for the winter!
Okay, friends, it’s your turn! What are your biggest planning challenges? And how do you stay on top of everything when life gets crazy? And which of these September calendars has caught your eye? 🍂
