🎁 How Do You Make a Gift Box
There are several ways to make a sunshine gift box but these are some favorites but feel free to adapt as you would like. Each kind of box will contain some of the same items with just a few variations.
Step One: Who is it going to? The contents will vary depending on the recipient that is intended.
Step Two: What is the occasion that the box is being sent? If it is a get well wishes one then there might be fuzzy socks, snacks, lip balm vs when it’s a teacher appreciation where it is candle, snacks, gift cards.
Step Three: Go shopping and assemble the box. Make sure to buy a couple of bags of shreds to help fill up the box. White always looks nice and goes with everything.
Step Four: Glue or tape the flaps of the US Postal Service box prior to filling it. It helps you be able to move the box around before you have to start assembling the goodies. Mail off your package.
✔️ Types of Packages
🤒 Get Well Gift Packages
The get well package is the first thing we all think of when we make a yellow sunshine box. It’s intended to make someone’s life bright and cheery during a time when it’s down in the dumps.
These packages can span simple snacks (see the yellow snack list below) and socks to being extravagant, depending on who you are giving it to.
Not every item needs to be yellow. Look for something that will cheer up your family member or friend and still coordinates with the theme of the box. Yellow tin can of tea, yellow container of bubble bath, yellow lip balm or yellow fuzzy socks.
👶 Baby Gift Packages
When making your baby gift package, you will know well in advance that you will be sending one out so you can start collecting your bright yellow and cheerful gift items.
Yellow fleece baby blanket, wash cloths and baby onesies that match your box. You know there is enough baby lotions, soaps and such on the market that you can stock your box to the brim for this new mom.
🎓 College Care Packages
Moms of college kiddos are always looking for ways to make the care package boxes a little different and yet special for when it is opened.
Kids love snacks so make sure to fill it to the brim with the list below. Don’t forget to add items like lip balm, yellow/aqua hair towel, hand cream and stress balls for mid terms. Don’t forget to add in a Camelback Water Bottle with straw.
🧑🏫 Teacher Appreciation
If anyone needs some extra love with a box like this, it has to be your child’s teacher who works tirelessly everyday. You don’t have to bring in the gifts like everyone else is going to. Your box is going to stand out from the crowd.
Many of us like to add in gift cards and there are color coordinated ones for your box including VISA, Cheesecake Factory or a black Amazon one that coordinates.
👵 Gifts for Senior Citizen Friends and Family
We don’t want to forget our elders when gift giving these special boxes as they are ones that need it the most.
They love getting a few treats (who doesn’t??) but you may need to think outside the box (ha, ha – do you get it????) and be creative with their items.
Look for items they can use in their life and brings joy when they look at them or use them. Bible study case, coordinated throw pillow covers, tin of their favorite tea and fresh water bottle to make sure they are getting their fluids in each day.

📪 Post Office Box Sizes and Measurements
The two I used for the photos were the MEDIUM FLAT RATE and the LARGE FLAT RATE boxes.
The medium measures 11″ x 8 ½” x 5 ½” for a top loading.
The large measures 12 ¼” x 12″ x 6.”
The SMALL FLAT RATE will not work as the opening is only 1 ⅝” but you could use the flower motifs and the little popcorn wraps to put inside. The other thing you can do it to glue the flower on the bottom corner so it is partially on the top of the package and partially on the side and back.
The LARGE FLAT RATE side loading will need to be used in the similar way as the SMALL FLAT RATE one.
10 Gifts Under $5 Total
When you need to make a meaningful gift and don’t need to spend a ton of money, there are tons of thoughtful options.
This is the time to use the tags and flowers as tags for your goodies. Pull out the generic ribbon you have stashed in your drawer…is it yellow, white or black? It will work perfect!
- Golden Oreos – wrap with ribbon and add tag
- Larger bag of Peanut M-n-M’s -wrap with ribbon and add tag
- $1 basket from thrift store plus a bag of lemons you put in the basket – wrap with ribbon and add tag
- $1 basket from thrift store plus 3-4 lemons and a little container of Crystal Light Lemonade – add tag.
- Add these yellow gingham mason jar lids to the mason jars you already have and add in Minute Maid Lemonade with one of the tags.
- Big container of Orville Redenbacher Popcorn with popcorn tag
- Yellow cake mix with frosting with cute tag or put into a coordinated bag
- Give a sick friend a bag of Halls wrapped (yes, yellow!) with one of the tags and a nice note you are thinking of them.
- Find a couple boxes of yellow or white tissue boxes for friends with the sniffles. Add your tag and get well greetings.
- Give a healthy gift of golden raisins -wrap with ribbon and add a tag.
❓ FAQ
The ideas are endless of what to include. We love creating a theme in the box so start with the base of a box, basket, bag or bucket. Add in the shreds to make it fuller and then start adding in the items of your choice. Cut out the flower motifs and make sure to glue them or add them on top of all of the goodies.
Pick a yellow bag or smaller bucket to start. Pick three items to put in the base. Hit up the dollar store and find 1-3 yellow flowers (like sunflowers) to add in and call it good.
The key is to make the base smaller so it still fills full.
You don’t need to worry as the recipient will be thrilled you thought of them.
