📅 Calendar Planning Hacks For A Magical May
Planning ahead is probably the best way I manage to stay productive and stress-free especially when it comes to those not-so-fun tasks we all love to procrastinate.
Of course, there’s more to it. Over time, I figured out some planning strategies that really work for me. Feel free to incorporate whichever suit you and adapt them to your needs.
🌈 Embrace the Power of Visual Organization
I heavily rely on colors and symbols to make my calendar come to life. It’s not just about making them look pretty. It’s about making the information pop off the page and into my brain. Here’s my tried-and-true system:
👉Color-Coding – I assign a specific color to each category of activity. This way, I can see at a glance what my day (or week, or month) looks like.
Color | Category |
---|---|
🔵 Blue | Work deadlines and meetings |
🟢 Green | Family activities |
🔴 Red | Important events |
🟠 Orange | Errands and chores |
🟡 Yellow | Social commitments |
🟣 Purple | Self-care |
👉Symbols – These are another great way to add visual interest and make your calendar more informative. The ones below are a few of my favorites:
Symbol | Meaning |
---|---|
⭐ Star | Birthdays |
❤️ Heart | Anniversaries |
‼️ Exclamation points | Important deadlines |
💲 Dollar sign | Bill payments and other purchases |
💡 Lightbulb | Bright ideas |
✔️ Checkmark | Completed tasks |
✈️ Airplane | Travel plans |
🎵 Music note | Concerts and performances |
🙂 Smiley face | Fun outings |
🔎 Go From Macro to Micro
Those little squares on the monthly calendar can get pretty crowded! That’s why I always use my free printable weekly planner to supplement the monthly overview I get from the calendar templates.

Then, I zoom in a bit more with this free printable daily planner. This way, I have plenty of space for everything: to-dos, reminders, and notes.
They give me the extra space I need to jot down to-do lists, notes, and reminders. Simple and efficient!
🖋️ Break Down Big Tasks
Any month is a busy month, and May makes no exception. I highly encourage you to break down big tasks into smaller chunks.
Don’t write “plan summer vacation” on your calendar. Instead, go for microtasks like “research flights” or “book hotel“. It’s a great way to stay on track and not feel overwhelmed.
✨ Things To Do in May
May weather is amazing – warm, but still milder than summer. My advice? Don’t miss out on everything this month has to offer. Let’s grab our calendars and schedule some of the holidays and activities below:
🌵 Cinco De Mayo
I’m totally ready for a fiesta and lucky to have a family that loves Mexican food. Cinco de Mayo is a great excuse to whip up my famous slow cooker Mexican dip. Not to brag, but it is a real crowd-pleaser!

Also, margaritas are a must for this occasion. And since this celebration should always be as colorful as possible I decorate using these free Cinco de Mayo printables. There are tons of fun party printables in there from banners and candy containers to signs and photo props. Olé!
🤱🏻 Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day is May 10th, just 5 days after Cinco de Mayo so be sure to plan it in advance. It’s so amazing to spoil our moms with flowers and some amazing homemade food.
They took care of us for so long, now it’s our turn to give back!
Also, slip this cute free printable Mother’s Day card in that gift basket you’re preparing. It’s a wonderful way to express your love and gratitude.
🎓 Graduations
May is graduation season and it’s time to celebrate all those amazing graduates. Kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews and friends – all of them deserve recognition of their hard work and accomplishments.

If you’re planning a graduation party, don’t miss my free graduation party printables. These are editable for any year, and turn out great on a black and white printer. Cute and budget-friendly too!
🧺 Spring Cleaning
May might be the last month of spring, but it’s definitely not too late for spring cleaning! I always try to make it more fun by playing some lively music.
To make my work more efficient, I use these free printable spring cleaning checklists. You can use the pre-filled version if you like a bit of structure or make your own cleaning routine from scratch using the blank version. Either way, I promise you’ll make the house sparkle much faster this way.
🌱 Gardening
My garden is my oasis of peace and relaxation. It’s also the place where I sweat and accumulate dirt under my fingernails.😄
Before you can sip a margarita and admire the fruit of your labor (literally!) you best get to work. This free printable garden planner is my go to resource for planning and maintaining my little patch of heaven. It’s also great for beginners – it has are all the worksheets and trackers to keep your garden organized and thriving! 🌸
