11 Reheat Onion Rings in the Air Fryer

The excess moisture from the onion can ruin the batter and result in soggy onion rings that nobody wants to eat. Not many people know that reheating onion rings in the air fryer can bring back its former glory of crispy exterior and soft interior. Learn how to turn leftover onion rings into crispy onion rings that taste fresh!

📝 Why This Works

✔️Hot air circulation – The air fryer uses a hot air circulation to heat food in a short amount of time, without the need for additional oil. It also

✔️ Healthy – Unlike the fryer, you do not need as much oil when you reheat onion rings in the air fryer. You can even skip the oil altogether.

✔️ Crispy texture – Air frying leftover onion rings will bring back the crispiness and former glory!

✔️ Quick – The air fryer doesn’t need to be preheated, which is why it’s a lot faster than many conventional methods.

🥔 Ingredients

You Just Need Two Ingredients!

🛒 Leftover onion rings – Whether it is takeout or pre-cooked frozen onion rings, you can reheat them using the air fryer with this recipe.

🛒 Oil sprays – A cooking spray will help crisp up the onion rings. I like to spritz olive oil spray, but you can use vegetable oil or any other spray you like.

⏲️ Equipment and Tools

✅ Air fryer – I used my Ninja air fryer, which comes with the “Air Fry” function. I also find that air fryers with the tray are better for reheating fried food so I tend to pull out my Instant Vortex Air Fryer Oven.

✅ Air fryer liner – You can use a silicone air fryer liner for easy cleanup. Shop Amazon for The Best Air Fryer Liners single-use and multi-use liners.

✅ Tongs – Tongs will be useful when moving onion rings into and out of the air fryer.

🔥 Instructions

👉 Step 1: Lightly Spray the leftover onion rings with a spray olive oil.

👉 Step 2: Place onion rings one by one in the air fryer basket. Leave room for air and do a single layer at a time. Put the air fryer at 375°F degrees and air fry for 4-5 minutes. Add an extra minute if you want them extra crispy.

👉 Step 3: Shake the basket every few minutes and keep an eye on the onion rings. Different air fryers might result in different cooking times. Cool off on a wire rack. Enjoy with your favorite dipping sauce or meal!

❗ Recipe Tips and Tricks

📌 Don’t overcrowd – Onion rings get soggy very easily. If the basket is too overcrowded, the onion rings might stick to each other and the skin won’t be able to reheat. Make sure to leave some room between each piece and do multiple batches if you have to.

📌 Serve right away – You do not want to let these onion rings get soggy twice! Reheated onion rings taste best when they are right out of the air fryer. Serve up immediately, along with your favorite combinations.

📌 Seasonings – For a more robust flavor, season with salt, pepper, and any other seasonings you like. I sprinkled a bit of paprika for a little kick.

🧑‍🍳 Storage and Reheating

If you still have leftovers after reheating the onion rings, make sure to refrigerate in an air-tight container. You can also freeze them in a ziplock bag after they have cooled down. Make sure not to crush them in the freezer. Freezing them isn’t optimal but can be done.

✔️ Other Ways To Reheat Onion Rings

👉 Microwave – Microwave the onion rings for about 30 seconds or 1 minute at a maximum. The high heat from the microwave should be quick to heat up the onion rings, but it will likely make it soggier.

👉 Skillet – Heat the onion rings on an oiled frying pan on medium heat until they are crispy and thoroughly heated. Cool on a plate lined with a paper towel in order to catch any excess oil drippings.

👉 Oven – Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Spritz with oil and bake for 10 minutes at 350°F or until the inside is thoroughly heated.

👉 Toaster oven – Place the onion rings on a baking tray. Similar to the conventional oven, place at 350°F for 10 minutes or until it is heated.

🍟 Serving Suggestions

⭐ Burgers – Onion rings are the perfect side for any kind of burger or sandwich. Make yummy air fryer hamburgers, air fryer chicken burgers, or air fryer turkey burgers to serve alongside the onion rings. If you are more of a sandwich person, you can make club sandwiches or panini sandwiches.

⭐ Pizza – Another one of my favorite ways to pair air fryer onion rings is with pizza. Try making this Easy Oven Roasted Portobello Mushroom Pizza, Personal Naan Pesto Pizza, or Vegetarian Spinach Alfredo Pizza recipe for an easy fix.

⭐ Side dish – You can also make the onion rings the star of the dish! Serve onion rings with other sides, such as air fryer waffle fries and air fryer tater tots. For a healthier option, pair them with a side of vegetables, like celery and carrot sticks with a ranch dip. For other air fryer recipes, check out this section.

⭐ Dipping sauce – Pair your reheated onion rings with your favorite dipping sauce, such as BBQ sauce, ranch dressing, or ketchup.

Spraying with olive oil spray will help the onion rings become more crispy.
Using air fryer liners helps clean up but are completely optional.
Always remember to leave air between the food in the air fryer to allow circulation which gets the food crispy instead of soggy. If you pile on the onion rings to make a bunch faster, they will be soggy.
